Black History Month - "I Have a Dream" Speeches
As part of Black History Month, our Grade 10 students have shared their own "I Have a Dream" speeches, inspired by the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These speeches reflect their hopes, dreams, and values for a better world.
Student Speech 1
I dream of a world where people actually care about each other and not just when they need something. A world where no one is judged for how they look, where they’re from, or what they believe. A world where being kind isn’t rare, and helping people isn’t just for a show. I wish the world was less about money and more about happiness. Where success isn’t just about who has the most stuff but about who makes life better for others and has happy memories. Schools wouldn’t just teach facts but how to be good people, how to understand emotions, and how to actually prepare for life. I want a world where nature matters, where we stop destroying the planet for quick cash. Imagine cities covered in green, with clean air, clear skies, and animals not going extinct because of us. And mostly, I wish people would stop fighting over differences and start realizing we’re all just humans trying to figure things out. If we worked together instead of against each other, imagine how much better everything could be.
Student Speech 2
In my dream, the world is a place where love, compassion, and unity guide every action. People embrace each other's differences, working together to build a peaceful, just society. No one is left behind; every person is seen, heard, and valued. The earth thrives as we care for it with responsibility and reverence, and kindness spreads like wildfire.
"Let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." - 1 John 4:7-8
As the song "Imagine" by John Lennon reminds us, "Imagine all the people, living life in peace."
Student Speech 3
I would like the world to be like God wanted it. With no sins. With only good things, good actions, good inventions, and intentions. In 1 John 2:15-17, it says:
"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever."
Which means that now the world is bad, so we cannot stay on earth for long—we have to go to heaven.
Student Speech 4
I have a dream that one day everyone, no matter if they are rich or poor, will be treated the same because we are all made in God's image. I dream of a world where no one is looked down on or judged for what they have because we are all loved by God. I also dream that animals, just like people, should be treated kindly and with respect. Whether it’s a person or an animal, we should show love and care for everyone because we are all part of God’s creation, and He made us all equal, in His image.
"The rich and poor have this in common: The Lord made them both." - Proverbs 22:2
